A Year of Firsts

Message from our President

This issue of our university magazine is especially meaningful, as it's filled with stories of hope and new beginnings… A theme that resonates deeply throughout our institution and our community.

The Sept. 17 groundbreaking for the new Fox Cancer Center has been years in the making. For too long, the people in our region have faced the burden of traveling hundreds of miles to find specialized cancer care. This new center will be the first of its kind in our Far West Texas region, a beacon of hope for patients and families who’ve had to leave their support systems behind to fight this disease. The theme of this issue, "Hope Breaks Ground," captures the essence of what this facility will mean to our community — a place where world-class care, advanced research, and compassionate support can all be found right here at home.

This landmark achievement is just one of many "firsts" we’re celebrating. We proudly feature our trailblazing Hunt School of Dental Medicine Class of 2025, a group of talented and dedicated individuals who are the first to receive their D.M.D. from the school. As we expected, many from this inaugural class have decided to practice in our Borderplex, improving our community’s access to oral health care. Additionally, we're thrilled to showcase the launch of our region’s first-ever biomedical sciences Ph.D. program, which will train the next generation of scientists and researchers to tackle the unique health challenges facing our community.

These stories are a testament to our collective commitment to innovation, education and health care. They reflect the hard work of our faculty, staff and students, and the generous support of our community. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey. Enjoy the issue.
